Abstract

The paper deals with the hypothesis that using high efficient drives on pump applications, in Albania water sector, instead of fixed speed pumping systems will bring: potential energy savings, reduction of operational costs, finance stability of water enterprises, better management of water resources, increasing the quality of services to consumers, improving water quality and environmental protection. In the paper is analysis the energy savings and economic benefits from replacement of standard motor with energy efficient one, compensation of power factor and using of variable speed drive instead of throttling valves to control flow rate. The study results, based on life cycle cost, have shown that improving efficiency of pumping systems bring potential energy savings, from 15% up to 37%, better water management, increase performance for water enterprises, more supply hours for population, reduction of CO2 emission and the investment has a short payback time up to 3 years. The findings of the study are in accordance with the policy of the Albanian government and European Energy Efficiency Directive 2012/27/EU.
