Course description

Basics of semiconductor physics. Charge carrier generation. Current flow mechanisms in semiconductor. PN and metal-semiconductor junctions: static and dynamic characteristics. Solid-state diodes: static and dynamic characteristics, types of solid-state diodes. Bipolar junction transistor (BT), and unipolar junction (JFET) and MOS field effect transistors (MOSFET): working principle, static IU- characteristics, dynamic models, frequency dependence of parameters. Thyristors: working principle, classification. Basic processes of electronic circuit analysis. Basic amplifiers with bipolar and unipolar transistors. Selection and stabilisation of the static operating point (dynamic parameters analysis at low frequencies, low frequency mode: current and voltage amplification, input and output resistance.) Power amplifiers: class A, AB, B, C and D. Amplifier cascade (DC-connected amplifier: Darlington pair, cascade, phase translator, differential amplifier). Negative feedback. Operational amplifier. Impulse phenomena and linear design. Comparators: comparator with hysteresis (Schmitt's trigger circuit). Waveform generators (oscillators and multivibrators). Transistor as a switch. Analogue switches. Fundamental logic circuits (combinational and sequential).

Knowledge and skills acquired

Students broaden knowledge on the physical basis of semiconductor components and basic electronic circuits, acquire skills of an electronic component analysis and its proper application within the framework. They master the methods of analysing electronic circuits in the regime of large and small signal and acquire skills of analysis and synthesis of analog and basic digital circuits.

Course assessment

Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

1. define and understand the physical basics of semiconductors: generating charge carriers, power management mechanisms

2. understand the working principle of semiconductor components (pn diode and diode metal-semiconductor, bipolar and unipolar transistors) and apply their current-voltage characteristics when designing electronic circuits

3. evaluate the principles of selecting an operating point and dynamic models of semiconductor components for small signal amplifier design (current and voltage gain and input and output resistance), large signal power amplifier design (class A, B and AB) an

4. evaluate linear analogue circuits based on operational amplifiers using a negative feedback loop (inverting amplifier, adder, comparator)

5. design fundamental logic circuits (combinational and sequential)

6. evaluate basic laboratory equipment with respect to electronic circuit experiments and measurement of its fundamental properties and data interpretationa
