Research Area: Advanced Driver Assistance System

Safety in traffic is in the focus of many researchers in the last decade. Moreover, the development of in-vehicle electronics has allowed the implementation of powerful advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). In particular, ADAS are used for collision avoidance, parking assistance, driver mental state monitoring, cruise control, lane-keeping, etc. Such systems increase traffic security and are the basics for the development of future autonomous vehicles.

The research activities are focused on the development of new ADAS algorithms, suitable for implementation on realistic ADAS-embedded platforms. Generally, ADAS implements artificial intelligence-based algorithms which consume a significant amount of hardware resources. Therefore, the reduction of the need for hardware resources, while keeping the satisfaction accuracy of implemented algorithms, is a crucial task when implementing ADAS algorithms on realistic embedded platforms. Moreover, the execution of ADAS algorithms in real-time is necessary, which as a consequence has the optimization of algorithm code and efficient usage of different embedded systems features like memory access, bus usage optimization, camera image acquisition, etc.
