Research Area: Smart power electronics applications

Power electronics converters cotrol development using RCP methods
In todays power electronics systems, rapid control prototyping becames a standard in control development, as a bridge betweent the simulation an real world applications. By using the HIL system, an MCU implemented control can be tested on developed power electronics converter's model. This enable efficient troubleshooting as well as testing different topologies of power electronics converters in multiple operation conditions. The established test environment enables plug-and-play solutions for 100-pin and 180-pin control cards from TI C2000 family, a well known industry standard DSP's.

Fast emulation approach in PV systems
Embedded in every PV system, inverter together with DC-DC MPPT converter creates essential chain link in green energy production. With fast emulation approach, PV energy production can be emulated in laboratory with no need for real world PV arrays. In one such system, programmable DC sources mimics the I-V characteristics of different types of solar panels and emulates the energy produced by PV systems. The emulation is cutted to 30 minutes as opposed to the real time emulation which can last as long as 12 – 16 hours. Such smart approach enables efficient research in power electronics components behaviour at real power load levels.

Battery storage solutions for green energy systems
Battery storage systems are used in renewable systems such as photovoltaics. In such systems, the energy is produced during the day, where the excess is stored in battery systems for later use a t night or at energy peak demands. Every such solution needs a customized battery system, where electrical and other characteristics are need to be known. For this purpose, battery tester can be used. Single battery cell is tested in every mode of operation; charging, discharging, cycle and storage. Furthermore, every battery storage system has battery cells connected in series to obtain desired voltage. Battery cells conneted in series needs to be monitored and balanced for proper operation. Different BMS systems are developed and analyzed for this purpose.
